4.2.13 The Sum and Difference Rules
The Sum and Difference Rules tell us that the derivative of a sum or difference is simply the sum or difference of the derivatives. In other words, differentiation distributes over addition and subtraction. For example, suppose we want to differentiate

Using operator notation:

The derivative distributes over addition and subtraction. This works because differentiation is a linear operation.

Using the sum derivative rule we could re-write the about expression as the sum of three derivatives:

One it is in this form we apply the rules we let he math tell us what to do. The above expression is saying “the rate of uptake is the sum of three derivatives”. Remember \(\frac{d}{dt}\) is an operatator telling us to ‘take the derivative of’ what ever comes next.

4.2.18 The Exponential Rule
One of the most remarkable functions in all of calculus is the natural exponential function (e):

This function is unique because its rate of change is equal to its value at every point:

This means that the tangent line at any point on the graph has a slope equal to the height of the curve at that point. No other elementary function has this “self-replicating” property.
